DIDCOT CASUALS FC - A BRIEF HISTORY
Didcot Casuals
were formed in 1969 and played their home games at St. Edmunds Park, Didcot.
Some of the founding members were Vernon Orr, Robert Rouse, Tony Wiercinkski,
Alan Bennett. Other players from the Casuals early years included Arthur "Nobby"
Bennett, Dereck Burke, Roy Burke, Colin Blaydon, Alan Davis (?Davies), Charlie
East, Bill Greenaway, John Greenaway, Colin Hillier, Jim Lucas, John Perham, Ian
Driscoll, John "Bomber" Bayliss, Howard "H" Thomas (whose son played for Didcot
Town), Chris "Pecker" Woodley, Goff Woodley and Ian Thurley.
John Bayliss was known as
Bomber because when he took a corner he hit them across so hard, that everyone
was frightened to head the ball and used to duck - no goal was ever scored from
one! At the start of their second season, a Reserve team was also formed and
then both teams entered the North Berks League, where they stayed until the Club
folded, later to be reformed. The big local derby between Didcot Casuals and
Didcot Athletic (a local club formed in the 1950s) was eagerly awaited each
season. There was a great atmosphere at the club and normally a dinner and dance
was held at the end of the season at Didcot's Conservative or Labour Club's.
Didcot Casuals FC was reformed
in 1999-2000 by the current Chairman Dave Taylor, with a new strip and new
badge. In the first season back in the North Berks League in 03/04 season we
were crowned champions of Div 4 and were runners up in the Charity Shield. Other
success recently was the Reserve team being runners up in Div 5 in 06/07.
2007/08 has been successful for both the 1st XI and the reserves; the 1st XI
winning division 3 and the reserves the League Cup. (More information
below).
The club is now building for
the future and recently achieved status as an FA Charter Standard Club. Our work
is committed to providing amateur football opportunities for everyone (girls,
boys, women and men) throughout Didcot and the surrounding area. Didcot Casuals
FC are affiliated to the Berks & Bucks FA (REG. NO. JBD00061) and have teams
playing in not only the North Berks Football League, but Upper Thames Valley
League, Oxford Mail Boys League and the Oxford Mail Girls League.
