North Berks Football League Roundup

5th September 2009

(Phil Annets)

Eight different players scored hat-tricks on a goal-packed Saturday of North Berks League football. In Division One Faringdon Town maintained their 100% start with a 4-1 victory over Drayton, with goals from Peter Soane, A Fly, Dan Courtney and Richard Evans. Didcot Casuals are finding life tough in the top division going down 1-0 for the second successive week, this time away at Harwell Village thanks to early substitute Daniel Osborne’s 30th minute strike. Elsewhere Ben Matthews with two and Stephen Annetts helped Lambourn Sports open their league campaign with a 3-1 victory at home to Crowmarsh Gifford. Saxton Rovers started the defence of their title with an emphatic 4-0 win over Warborough and Shillingford.

In Division Two Jim Oliver grabbed all three goals for Benson AFC in their 3-0 win over East Hendred, the first a penalty following a deliberate handball from an East Hendred defender who was subsequently sent off. Another hat-trick was claimed by Tom Weeks for Childrey United in their 4-2 home win over Saxton Rovers Reserves. Alan Haines added the fourth whilst Craig O’Connor grabbed a brace for the visitors. Harwell International continued their impressive start by defeating Grove Rangers 3-0 with a goal from Mike Yardley and two from Bryn Ingram. Coleshill United went in 1-0 up at half-time in their match at Long Wittenham Athletic thanks to a James Head strike, but a hat-trick from Andy Mariott, a brace from Steve Malloy and a goal from Andy Sell resulted in a 6-1 victory for the hosts. Another hat-trick was claimed by Chris Potter in Botley United’s 4-1 victory at home to Steventon. Steve Doyle scored the fourth whilst Alex Bird got the consolation for Steventon. Marcham inflicted the second defeat in as many matches for Lambourn Sports Reserves winning 3-1 with two goals from Wes Costar and one from Dave Tunnah. Christian Quick scored late on for the hosts.

Division Three saw the match of the day as Sutton Courtenay came from three goals down at half-time to win 5-4 at Shrivenham ‘A’. An Andy McKinley strike and a Tom Rawle hat-trick for the home side were responded to by a goal from Simon Abraham, a penalty by Jessie Mortimer and a hat-trick by Daniel Cox for the visitors. In two other almost as high scoring games, Bampton Town drew 4-4 at home to Kintbury Reserves, with two goals from Dan Hodgson and a goal apiece from Nathan Beckett and Hancock, whilst Faringdon Town Reserves thrashed Harwell International Reserves 6-2 with two goals from Martyn Hathaway, one each from Matthew Clark, Chris Kershaw and Michael Marsh, and an own goal. The other game in the division saw Hanney United run out 3-1 winners at home to Benson AFC Reserves with Matty Booker, Danny Sayer and James Bishop all on the scoresheet.

In Division Four it was a baptism of fire for NBFL new boys Appleton Stars, who were thumped 8-0 at home to Coleshill United Reserves with Anton Starling and James Glock, both with two goals apiece, Chris Wardoper, Dale Head, Peter Byrne and Gary Roberts all contributing to the rout. Challow United made it two wins out of two with a 4-3 victory at Didcot Casuals Reserves, whilst Grove Rangers Reserves shared the points with Uffington United in a 2-2 draw. Matthew Hale and Dave Stebbings were on target for Grove, Lee Barnett and Nick Fuller responded for Uffington.

Division Five witnessed the biggest result of the day as Uffington United Reserves put 10 goals past Challow United Reserves without reply. A hat-trick by Keith Edwards, two goals from Devon Bryan, and one each from Chris Pentecost, Aaron Williams, Ian Moore, Jonathan Mildenhall and Dale Bird inflicted the damage. Didcot Casuals ‘A’ thrashed Hanney United Reserves 5-0 to maintain their perfect start, with two goals from Tom Purnell, and one each from Tim Young, Luke Ridley and Kevin Dawson. Benson Lions Reserves won 4-1 at home to Warborough and Shillingford Reserves with goals from Richie Lombard, Craig Kirkman, Liam Wilkinson and Phillip Goss. James Jeffrey responded for the visitors. Two goals from David Neal were not enough for Steventon Reserves who lost 3-2 at Sutton Courtenay Reserves through goals from Max Houston, Max Warrington and Jack Perry. Bampton Town Reserves drew 1-1 at home to Hagbourne United Reserves. Danny Painting scored for the home side and Nick Guiry for the away team. In the final Division Five match Long Wittenham Athletic Reserves won 2-1 at Stanford-in-the-Vale Reserves.

Elsewhere, a superb four minute hat-trick by second half substitute Tom Collins was not enough for AFC Wallingford who succumbed to a 4-3 defeat at their more senior Wessex League opponents Westbury United after extra time in the FA Vase first qualifying round.
