North Berks Football League Roundup

19th September 2009

(Phil Annets)

In Division One three teams maintain their 100% records. Faringdon Town won their fourth game of the season 3-0 at previously unbeaten Harwell Village to stay top of the table, with goals from Paul Hulme, Peter Soane and Derren Harrington. Defending champions Saxton Rovers made it three wins out of three beating Didcot Casuals 4-1 at home, although had Ben Sutton converted a penalty for Didcot in the first half things might have been different. Mark Hartley and Kirk Giddings scored two apiece for Saxton with Lawrence Hoey netting for the visitors. AFC Wallingford gained their second win thanks to a 4-2 victory at Lambourn Sports. Matthew Pedder’s two second half goals for Lambourn were not enough to cancel out the two goals from Jordan Brown and one each from Shaun Kelleher and Tom Collins. In the other first division match Crowmarsh Gifford finally got a win under their belt defeating Warborough and Shillingford 6-1 thanks to a hat-trick by Liam Strudwick, a brace from Phil Hedges and a goal from Paul Hannigan.

In Division Two Harwell International lost their own 100% record falling 3-1 at Botley United who join them on nine points at the top of the table. Chris Potter, James Bruce and Jamie Phillips netted for Botley, Wayne Robins replied for Harwell. Also on nine points is Marcham who recorded their third consecutive victory defeating Coleshill United 4-1. Phil Jeacock, Frank Haines and a Wes Coster double for Marcham was responded to by a Shane Blake consolation for Coleshill. Long Wittenham Athletic lost their 100% record, too, going down 3-2 in a closely contested match at home to Grove Rangers. Tim Barton bagged a brace for long Wittenham whilst Dave Stebbings and Dean Worthington were amongst the goals for Grove. Steventon registered their first win of the season in a comprehensive 4-0 victory over bottom placed Lambourn Sports Reserves who remain pointless after four matches. Nathan Brown, Stuart Coppock, Darren Pettifer and Shane Preece-Tripp did the damage for Steventon. In the division’s final game Benson AFC lost 2-1 at home to Saxton Rovers Reserves with Joseph Flower’s netting for the home team.

In Division Three Kintbury Rangers Reserves remain unbeaten at the top of the table despite a closely fought 3-3 draw at home to Benson AFC Reserves. Moving up to second is Drayton Reserves following a 6-1 thrashing of Sutton Courtenay. Ben Taboada with two, Grzegorz Krawczyk, Pat Clark, Daryl Hutt and Peter Ivey were all on the scoresheet for Drayton. Sutton’s reply came from Jesse Mortimer. Benson Lions ran out 4-2 victors at bottom place Harwell International Reserves who remain pointless after four matches. Two goals from Dan Sanderson and one each from Steve Burns and Alex Smallshaw sealed the victory. Charlie Jamieson and Dan Humphreys netted for the home team. Harwell Village Reserves’ perfect start was broken as they went down 2-0 at Faringdon Town Reserves thanks to goals from Richard Evans and Martyn Hathaway. Finally, Shrivenham ‘A’ lost 4-0 at home to Wootton and Dry Sandford Reserves with two goals coming from Tom Harman, and one apiece from Paul Dew and Nick Rudge.

In Division Four free-scoring Stanford-in-the-Vale made it three wins out of three with a stunning 9-0 victory at pointless Hagbourne United, making it 28 goals scored with just one against in their first three matches. Jason Evans netted four times with the other goals coming from Dan Bradbury, Adam Clay, Michael van der Mortel, Ian Rollinson and a Hagbourne own goal. However, despite this perfect start from Stanford they are only sitting in third place in the table as two other teams maintained their own unbeaten starts to the season. Goals from James Glock, Peter Byrne, Dale Head and James Bye secured a 4-0 home victory for Coleshill United Reserves against Marcham Reserves, whilst Challow United won a closely contested match away to Grove Rangers Reserves 3-2 thanks to goals from Martin Turnbull, Jason McDowell and Ben Hummell. Jonathan Wells and Mario Andrade scored for Grove. Didcot Casuals Reserves won 5-2 at home to Faringdon Town ‘A’ with two goals from John Wilson, one each from Gareth Cole and Luke Hammond, and an own goal. East Hendred Reserves slumped to their second successive heavy defeat losing 6-1 at home to Uffington United with only an own goal to show on their ‘goals for’ column so far. Nick Frost hit a hat-trick, Lee Barrett a pair and Tim Haines also scored for Uffington.

In Division Five Long Wittenham Athletic Reserves maintained their perfect start with a 6-1 victory at Didcot Casuals ‘A’, for whom Tom Purnell scored a penalty. Bampton Town Reserves remain unbeaten following a 5-1 home victory over Warborough and Shillingford Reserves. George Seacole and Steve Godfrey both bagged two goals for Bampton with James Walkington scoring the fifth, Shaun Gilsenan replied for Warborough. Uffington United Reserves hit seven goals without reply at home to Challow United Reserves who remain pointless and goalless. Kevin Edwards and Devan Bryan will be fighting for the match ball, both having scored a hat-trick. Aaron Williams added to the rout. Hanney United Reserves were the biggest goal scorers of the day winning 11-3 at home to Hagbourne United Reserves. James Bishop scored a hat-trick, Craig Payne, Nick Clinch and J Joshua all hit a couple, with John Mannery and Andrew Alder also netting. Dave Sheppard scored what turned out to be a consolatory hat-trick for Hagbourne. In the final game of the day, a Liam Wilkinson double secured a 2-0 victory for Benson Lions Reserves at home to Sutton Courtenay Reserves.
