Faringdon Cruise to Fifth Straight Win

Two clear-cut chances for Faringdon Town in the first minute of their NBFL Division One encounter with winless Warborough and Shillingford set the template for this match. Within six minutes of kick-off Faringdon were two up thanks to two well taken goals by Peter Soane and Martin Francis.

In glorious sunshine Faringdon could have added four more goals in the next 10 minutes, but failed to do so due to inaccurate finishing and excellent shot stopping by the Warborough keeper, Adam Dewar. However, in the 20th minute the third goal did arrive, as Chris Benson pounced onto a loose ball, following a good save by Dewar, to score from close range. In the 23rd minute Matt Pill undertook a mazy run before sliding a through ball into the path of Daniel Courtney, who calmly slotted home to make it 4-0.

More chances fell Faringdon’s way in the most one-sided of halves and with five minutes of the half remaining Soane made an incisive run down the right hand side and delivered a perfect cross for Derren Harrington to head home at the far post to make the half time score 5-0.

It was to Warborough’s credit that they came out in the second half and took the game to Faringdon. Unfortunately, in the 58th minute, Dewar inexplicitly threw the ball to the advancing Martin Francis who crossed from the right for Daniel Courtney to claim his second and Faringdon’s sixth goal. However, Warborough created several chances themselves and were finally rewarded with a goal in the 86th minute when Jason Davis’ low cross from the right eluded everybody except Ryan Simmons at the far post, who put the ball in the net from close range.

In the division’s only other game Marcham Reserves drew 2-2 at home to Uffington United thanks to a last minute equaliser by Jonathan Cummings. Neil Cotterell scored the host’s other goal whilst Lee Barrett and Matt Cramp netted for Uffington.

Division Five now sees four teams at the top of the table with nine points. Devan Bryan with two, Kevin Edwards and Aaron Williams all scored for Uffington United Reserves in their 4-1 victory over Sutton Courtenay Reserves for whom Jack Dingwall scored. Benson Lions Reserves won 6-3 at Challow United Reserves who have yet to register a point. Derek Bond hit a hat-trick for the visitors along with goals from Scott Hopkins, Chris Billows and Liam Wilkinson. Gareth Eltham hit a brace and Simon Parker scored for the home team. Bampton Town Reserves remain unbeaten following a 3-3 draw at Steventon Reserves. Goals from Chris Day, Shaun Malone and Kevin Allen for Steventon were matched by two goals from Chris Allinson and one from Dan Paintin for Bampton. Warborough and Shillingford Reserves won 5-2 at home to Stanford-in-the-Vale Reserves thanks to two Dan Blackford goals and one each from Marc Charman, Dean Maycock and Richard Willens.
