Reading Football League 2 North Berks Football League 1

 

The North Berks League Representative Team gave a greatly improved and most spirited performance before losing to a late goal in this most closely contested and entertaining fixture.

With a completely different starting line-up from the team that were thrashed by The Sussex County League earlier in the season, the North Berks started the game very well and took the lead after 23 minutes when a flowing move between John Robert Willis (Harwell Village) and Gareth Fenton (Ardington) ended with Danny Curran (Drayton) firing home. We continued to counter attack well with J.R. Willis causing problems to the Reading defence with his speed and trickery, the experienced back three of Lewis Maciak (Harwell Village), Andy Cooper (Ardington) and David Smyth (Ardington) ably backed up by Drayton goalkeeper Graeme Coulthard were playing well to keep the lead intact as we shaded the first-half.

Reading came out much stronger in the second-half and after 55minutes they equalised when Chris Jewell (Highmoor/Ibis) set up Jamie Handscomb (Cookham Dean) to fire home from close range. Although Reading were now having more of the play, we continued to look dangerous on the counter attack and on several occasions the crosses from our wide men JR Willis and Ben Sutton Ardington) came very close to being converted. However, with 10 minutes remaining Reading scored the deciding goal when a cruel deflection flat footed our defence and allowed Handscombe to cross for Jimmy Clarke (Mortimer) to grab the winner.
